Introducing NylaPay, the Zakat and Sadaqah payment app

Introducing NylaPay, the Zakat and Sadaqah payment app

Introduction

Zakat and Sadaqah are mandatory and voluntary forms of charity, respectively, and they are among the most powerful ways to create meaningful social impact. They are Islamic instruments of economic justice and social solidarity — designed to support those in need, reduce inequality, and promote community wellbeing.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) estimates that between $600 billion and $1 trillion is given globally each year through traditional philanthropic channels like Zakat. Zakat is a mandatory 2.5% of wealth, and it ensures that a portion of a person’s assets is directed toward helping those in need. Yet much of this giving happens informally, making it difficult to measure outcomes or ensure that contributions are used effectively to address pressing challenges like poverty, exclusion and underdevelopment. Sadaqah is a voluntary form of charity in Islam, and can be given at any time, in any amount, and for any cause. While there are no reliable global figure for Sadaqah, the UNHCR’s 2023 report revealed that Sadaqah contributed $16.7 million to 839,000 beneficiaries across 15 countries in 2022. Additionally, Muslim Americans donated an estimated $1.8 billion in 2021 through Zakat and Sadaqah.

We built NylaPay to bring structure and clarity to the giving process — allowing Zakat and Sadaqah contributions to reach individuals and verified organizations directly, with full transparency and measurable impact.

NylaPay simplifies the process of giving Zakat and Sadaqah by enabling seamless donations from donors to verified beneficiaries. The app helps users:

  • Easily calculate their Zakat.
  • Automate payments for consistent giving.
  • Make donations to verified beneficiaries and organizations.
  • Track and monitor donations, ensuring transparency and measurable impact.

Using mobile, web, USSD and IVR (Interactive Voice Response) technologies, NylaPay provides a comprehensive solution that supports both formal and informal sectors. Donors can use various payment methods, including mobile wallets and cards, to easily contribute to verified beneficiaries.

With over 30,000 users on its waitlist, NylaPay is launching the new service in collaboration with certified Zakat and Sadaqah funds, trusted payment service providers, financial institutions, and fintech platforms around the world.

By streamlining Zakat and Sadaqah, NylaPay contributes to global goals like alleviating poverty and hunger, promoting quality education and health, and reducing inequality in underserved communities — helping to bridge the SDG financing gap and helping ensure that the over $1 trillion donated annually drives measurable impact.
